Are you tired of spending 30 minutes or more to cook a nutritious dinner? Unless you're an Emeril or a Julia Childs, you probably don't enjoy taking time away from family and friends to make tasty, healthy meals. Here are some ways to cut your time in the kitchen and make your cooking experience more enjoyable.

Start with the kitchen itself. Is it organized? Are the utensils you use the most easily accessible? Keeping spatulas, knives, spoons, and oven mitts within reach will cut down the time you spend going through drawers trying to find them.

Toss out those recipes that have a million steps and require lots of beforehand preparation. Go to your local library or bookstore and find recipe books with 5, 10, or 15 minute meals. You can find healthy, tasteful dishes that take very little time to prepare.

Keep your ingredient list to 5-10 ingredients, if possible. The less you have to use, the less time it will take to make the meal.

Read the recipe. Make sure you understand the steps and prioritize which ones you will do first. Oftentimes you can be cutting vegetables or meat while you have water boiling or something baking.

Cook and bake in bulk! Many foods and breads can be frozen and even if it takes a little longer to make a large amount, you will save time later when you pull dinner out of the freezer!

Empty your dishwasher before you start cooking. This allows you to load your dirty dishes straight into your dishwasher and makes your cleaning-up time shorter. If you don't have a dishwasher, or have dishes that need to soak, keep your sink full of hot, soapy water and toss your utensils in when you are finished using them.

If you have to wash your dishes by hand, let them drip dry. You can spend time doing something fun while your dishes dry by air.

Use your "mechanical maids." Crockpots and breadmakers are wonderful inventions and save loads of time. Along the same bent, casseroles can be easy to make and only require baking. As an added bonus, your kitchen will smell really good while your food cooks!

Keep kids and pets out of the kitchen while you cook. Not only is this safer, it cuts down on your distractions and stress.

Dress in something comfortable. Why be uncomfortable while cooking if you don't need to be?

Pop in your favorite CD and listen while you cook. It's amazing how much stress you can relieve just by humming or singing along. And even if you're not a songbird, listening to something you enjoy can help your time in the kitchen be more pleasant.

In a day when your time is in such great demand but is also so precious, why spend an inordinate amount of time cooking when you can make a meal equally as tasty and healthy in 20 minutes?

There are various times in life when it is important to reflect on what we can do well. In the past year I have found a need to carefully consider what marketable skills and interests I have developed over the years. Through this evaluation - both with my husband and alone, as well as some brainstorming with a counselor at our local small business center - I came up with the idea of teaching breadmaking and sewing. These are two skills that I have maintained since I was young and are almost second nature for me, enhancing the opportunity to make some money on the side by holding some classes.

I have found that the actual teaching of the classes has not been the most difficult thing; rather it has been in finding venues to market and teach these classes. I called local area Parks and Recreation departments and I contacted Girl Scouts. Most offer fall and spring classes. Advertising in the local paper or even on a bulletin board at a grocery store are two other possibilities for getting the word out.

Both the Girl Scout liaison and the Parks and Recreation Director I contacted showed a genuine interest. The Parks and Recreation Director encouraged me to take a smaller class size, due to the amount of interest – which was under my desired minimum students. I did this with the recognition that if these ladies are satisfied with their experience, they will spread the word to other friends, increasing the likelihood of similar, more financially productive classes to come. Although it is easier to work with a smaller group, especially when one is getting practice on how to best teach something to people who are inexperienced, the financial trade-off must be considered. For my 6-week class, I charged $10 for the material kit and $12 – 15 per class session for each attendee. I also allowed the ladies to only pay for the weeks they would attend. To teach this sewing class, I needed to consider the supplies I would need to have available for my students – irons, ironing boards (compact and regular), cutting mats, rotary cutters and enough scissors for 10 students. The ten dollar charge for the material kit was intended to cover the cost of fabric, a pattern and thread. Planning ahead by purchasing appropriate supplies at estate and garage sales will make the cost of this outlay more manageable.

For my breadmaking class at the Parks and Recreation Department, I put on a demonstration but gave the women the opportunity to feel the bread dough and see each step in the process. I ground some grain for them, as well. And I passed out copies of the step-by-step routine of making bread from scratch. The honorarium for this class was $150. As someone who already has most of the essentials in my kitchen, I found that I only needed to replace my measuring cups and spoons to maintain a professional look. After 15 years, well loved utensils begin to show their age. This time I invested in stainless steel instead of plastic.

I have found that driving to and from and teaching these classes do not take up much of my time. However, it is important to recognize the need to allot time to both make a list and gather supplies beforehand and plan for sufficient time to unload the van and get supplies inside and set up. Inquiring about any needed power cords and running water at the facility were details I needed to remember. Practicing doing my presentation to someone who would not be critical but give me opportunity to express aloud what I had planned to say and give me constructive input helped give me confidence in my ability to communicate. Bringing samples of the desired result – whether it is a simple garment that I had made or samples of bread and rolls, with corresponding recipes – has helped pave the way for the ladies to invest the time and effort to begin to learn a new skill, as well.

Evaluating as I have gone along as well as at the conclusion of the course gives opportunity to learn from one's mistakes and recognize growth in one's own skills and ability to communicate effectively.

Overall, I like the benefits of teaching these classes because they do not take me away from home for excessive amounts of time. I can make a contribution to our income while building my confidence in my abilities. It is much easier to make money through what one already knows. I would like to suggest that you also brainstorm with your husband and friends to see what you can come up with to make money teaching what you already know.

When it comes to baking your own homemade loaf of bread, it's really a lot easier than you might think. All you need are a few basic ingredients and a loaf pan.

Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Make sure you use warm water. Hot water kills yeast!
2. Always make sure your yeast is fresh and not beyond the expiration date.
3. Let dough rise in a warm area of your kitchen. Do not let the dough rise in a hot area near your oven or stove.
4. Follow bread making recipes exactly. Do not skip any steps or ingredients.

Homemade Bread Recipe

2 cups milk, scalded
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
4 tablespoons shortening (Crisco)
3 teaspoons salt
2 packages dry yeast, softened
1 cup warm water (not hot)
6 cups of Robin Hood Flour

Using a small bowl, dissolve yeast in lukewarm tap water. Let yeast mixture stand for 10 minutes. Scald milk in a saucepan. Add granulated sugar, salt and shortening in a large bowl. Cool to lukewarm temperature. Add yeast mixture and then add flour gradually, beating thoroughly after each addition.

Turn dough out on a lightly floured dough board. Knead until smooth, then let it sit for about 10 minutes. Shape into a ball and place in a large bowl. Let dough rise until it has doubled in size, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Shape into loaves. Place in greased bread pans (use 1 1/4 pounds of dough for each loaf). Cover and let rise until double in size. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven to cool, then place bread in an airtight bread container.

This particular recipe for Apricot Bread is a really delicious moist bread. If you are allergic to nuts, you can substitute the nuts for an equal amount of raisins.

If you like to bake and freeze items ahead of time, this bread will freeze well. Let it completely cool and then wrap in plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil. It will keep for up to 3 months in your freezer.

Apricot Nut Bread Recipe

1 cup dried apricots
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup nuts, chopped
1/2 cup orange juice

Preparation: Soak the dried apricots for 15 minutes in warm water; drain and then chop them into small pieces and set aside.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt and the baking soda. In a large bowl, cream together the vegetable shortening and granulated sugar; add in the beaten egg. Stir in the water and orange juice until all ingredients are well combined.

Slowly blend in the flour mixture with the wet ingredients until all are combined. Gently fold in the chopped nuts and apricot pieces.

Lightly grease a loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. Pour batter into the loaf pan making sure that its even. Let it stand for 5 minutes before placing it into a preheated oven. Bake the Apricot Nut Bread at 350 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes or until its done. Remove from the oven and let it cool down for 10 minutes in the loaf pan, before transferring it to a wire rack to cool.

"Zojirushi, which means 'elephant brand' in Japanese, is called this for good reason. It feels as big as an elephant itself, with its 27 pounds of bread making mass. Be sure to use a tape measure on the committed space to ensure there's sufficient room. At 17 inchese x 12 inches, it's not a little appliance. With a height of about 9 inches when the lid is closed, you have to place it someplace that can take the lid opening. Be sure to measure cautiously if you will be placing it below any kitchen cupboards.

With the Zojirushi 2lb Home Bakery Supreme Breadmaker, 2 pound loaves of bread can be creaed with the dual paddles. You'll find the pan shape to be similar to typical oven bread pans. The dimensions of the pan are 5 inches x 9 inches x 5 inches, which is pretty typical. It can also be used to bake a 1.5 pound bread loaf. A highly domed lid provides adequate space for rising dough. You can make raisin bread or pizza dough with this machine, making it diverse in terms of its baking capability.

Bread's not all it's limited to making. Jam can be created too. You read that correctly; you can use fresh or canned fruit to produce your own jams from home. It will likewise bake whatever flavor of cake you might desire. You won't buy a more durable and longer lasting Bread Maker anywhere. Even though it's so powerful, you'll scarcely hear it kneading the dough.

Displays and buttons for most bread appliances are on the face or cover, but the Zo's are placed on a slanted panel which makes them a lot easier to see and read. People who use the Zojirushi it the Zo, and love that it comes from a almost century-old brand with a long history of manufacturing bread appliances. Manufacturers like this only survive that long if they're careful about satisfying their clients, and try to satisfy the consumer as much as they possibly can. For example is most home bread appliances are able to be programmed (i.e. at most 13 hours with this bread maker) so you get homemeade, hot bread upon waking.

The Zojirushi breadmaker tendsto be quieter than many others. This is superb because, if you reside in the real world, you likely don't desire to hear the knocking and thumping that is experienced along with most bread machines. Using the Zo, nevertheless, you are able to expect ultraquiet operation, so you will be able to sleep easily all nighttime and not being woken up to noisy bread kneading. With most of the bread machines you usually have various selections for making new varieties of bread, crust color and texture, or also the dough only mixing cycles. With the Zojirushi bread maker you're able to create, and save, 3 custom-made cycles that are 100% yours. If you have that favorite recipe from childhood you want to make in the Bread Maker, just program it inot the machine.

If you lose power, in particular in the summer months when numerous people run their air conditioners, then the Zo has a feature that you will love. If you experience a brownout or a quick blackout, the Zo will save the progress in memory, so it can finish the process once it has electric. This feature gives you up to 10 minutes to get back power. It can upset you to have made a loaf on a less reliable breadmaker and then wind up dumping the half-baked mess due to your electricity went out and the machine reset itself to the beginning.

The instruction book provided is easy to understand in plain English, simple instructions, and a number of starter recipes are clearly explained. Even with the minor typos you come across in the manual, it will not hurt your comprehension of the information within it. Zojirushi is concerned about its customers, and therefore provide a 800 support line that you can contact with any problem that come up. For example, many breadmakers include a wire handhold that bends down on the baking cooking pan, the Zo doesn't feature this. Luckily, you can find out through the help center that the horizontal cooking pan is better without the wire handle, and you should just use oven mitts. One time I discovered that I produced an uneven crust to my loaf of bread. When I phoned Customer Service, they informed me that this happens from time to time with breads that are heavier during the cycle for kneading. It is able to be easily fixed with a spoon by gently leveling off the top of the bread before it commences baking.

The Zo makes great gluten-free breads and wheat breads. It also manages a decent job using fast-rising yeasts used for 2 hour recipe loaves. If you have had it with the noise and uneven results of generic appliances, then the Zo will remind you of the delight of making fresh bread. "

The mixture is then poured into the bread pan that is placed in the machine. The breadmaker will then take some hours to bake the bread by first turning the mixture into dough and eventually baking it. The process of making dough is helped by a built-in paddle. Once the baking is done and has been allowed to cool down, the bread is then freed from the bread pan. The paddle at the bottom of the loaf should be removed from its place. A bread maker is a home appliance that has revolutionized the process of making breads. First manufactured in 1986 in Japan, breadmaker since then moved its way to homes in the United States and United Kingdom. By means of a breadmaker, automatic baking has become possible and more convenient.

As with ordinary baking, ingredients must first be measured according to the recipe.

Breadmaker breads are much easier to get spoiled as compared with the commercial breads due to the absence of additives. However, it is possible that sourdough starter may be added to the ingredients to prolong the shelf life of the breads.

Breadmakers have built-in timers that may be set for easier baking. Other machines can be programmed to only prepare the dough and not to bake the bread later, in this case the dough is baked in an oven. For either baking novices or seasoned pros, a dump cake is a no-brainer. To prepare one, you simply dump the ingredients into a bowl and beat them, then pour the batter into a pan and bake it. Although a dump cake is easy to make, it\'s just as good as a more fancy cake. Breadmakers have other uses as well. They may be set to make jams, pizza bases, wheat-free loaf, cakes, and pasta and in some instances, mochi- a Japanese rice bread.

Considerations in choosing a breadmaker:

- the over-all capacity of baking loafs

- the quality of bread produced

- the duration of time it takes to make one loaf

- the featured programs

- type: may either be single loaf breadmaker or multi loaf breadmaker

However, like with normal baking there may arise several problems concerning the quality of the bread produced. These may either be caused by the process of baking or the quality of breadmaker itself.

Doughy loaf

, This problem basically concerns the temperature of the breadmaker. The built-in thermometer must read 190 F. Once the baking is over and the loaf is still doughy, you may choose to continue baking it in a conventional oven or wait till the breadmaker cools down and start the whole process over.

Small bread

Lack of liquid added to the dough. The problem starts with the dissolving of the yeast. If too little liquid is used, the yeast may not be stimulated to produce the necessary carbon dioxide, which is instrumental in making the dough rise. Without this, the loaf may become dense and will be much smaller. Amish Bread Starter, creating a "Sour-dough" like bread. This starter makes a cinnamon bread, with optional raisins and nuts. From the "e-Cookbook" 65 Amish Recipes

2/3 c. sugar

2/3 c. milk

2/3 c. flour

2/3 c. oil

3 eggs

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. vanilla

1 to 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1 c. sugar

2 c. flour

1 1/4 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. baking soda

Combine ingredients in large airtight container with lid. Store at room temperature, do not refrigerate. Stir every day for 17 days. The recipe makes more than the 1 cup needed. But allows for evaporation.

Now the starter is ready. The following instructions are for either the starter you created above, or received from a loving friend.

For the next 10 days handle starter according to the following instructions.

Day 1, receive the starter

Day 2, 3 & 4 - stir

Day 5, Add 1 cup each flour, sugar and milk.

Day 6 & 7, stir

Day 8 & 9, stir

Day 10, Add 1 cup flour, sugar and milk.

Divide into 3 containers of 1 cup each for friends.

After removing the 3 cups of batter, mix in the following ingredients: Using a fork, beat by hand until well blended.

Add 1 cup raisins and 1 cup nuts (optional).

Grease pans with butter, sprinkle with sugar instead of flour. Bake at 325 for 1 hour. Cool 10 minutes, remove from pans.

In today's fast paced world, many of us sacrifice quality food for expediency' s sake. When it comes to fresh bread, it doesn't have to be that way. Bread maker machines are one of the greatest inventions sitting on the modern kitchen counter.

I love my breadmaker (a.k.a the bread machine, a.k.a. The Great White Wonder Cube!). It makes great bread, with less than half the work and time of conventional methods. There are a few things they don't tell you in the provided recipe book, though. The moisture content in flour can vary, depending on age and environment, and no matter how rigorously you follow the recipe, sometimes it's not going to work out perfectly. There are a two ingredients we can add, though, that will ensure they turn out wonderfully, every time.

Vital Wheat Gluten

Gluten is grain protein and not all flours have the same protein content. Bread flour has a higher protein content than all-purpose flour and cake flour has less. Bread flour costs more than all-purpose flour, but it will work just fine for making bread if you supplement the gluten content. Instead of buying several different kinds of flour for every little thing you do, buy all-purpose flour and add wheat gluten when making bread. It's not expensive and you need to use very little, about two teaspoons per loaf, so a single can will last you a long time.

When adding wheat gluten to a breadmaker recipe, you'll get the best results adding it to the pan with the flour. The manufacturer of my bread machine recommends adding the water before the flour, so I add the wheat gluten right after I put in the flour to keep it away from the water.

Dough Conditioner

The second secret ingredient is dough conditioner. Different commercial dough conditioners contain different ingredients – commonly a combination of wheat gluten, yeast and other chemicals such as ascorbic acid (a form of vitamin C), ammonium chloride, DATEM (an emulsifier), different calcium salts and sometimes soy.

It's a common problem with bread makers that have vertical pans to have a lighter crumb at the top of the bread loaf and a denser crumb at the bottom. Dough conditioners help solve this problem by strengthening the texture and giving a more consistent rise, leading to a more consistent crumb.

As with wheat gluten, you don't need much. Very little in fact. For a 1 1/2 pound loaf, I find that a mere 1/4 teaspoon of dough conditioner is enough to give me excellent results.

Whether it's wheat gluten or dough conditioner, you'll want to check the suggestions on the package for suggested amounts. With the dough conditioner, different brands will give you different results.

Many people who enjoy making their own panini want to take it to the next level. They not only create these super sandwiches themselves, but also actually use panini bread recipes to make their own bread! Even though itâ??s easy to find good bread in stores â?? and of course it is of course simpler to use the ready made stuff â?? itâ??s easier for those who bake their own bread to guarantee quality, especially if they are in places where good bread may be hard or impossible to find. Also, for those people who really love creating stuff, it can be really satisfying to do so.

For those of you whoâ??ve been interested to try making your own bread for panini but have been put off by the supposed complexity of doing so, take heart. Itâ??s not as hard as it may seem actually, and, as Iâ??ve mentioned above, it can be both fun and deeply satisfying.

Here is a great recipe for baking your own bread for use in panini. Itâ??s relatively simple as breadmaking goes and aromatic thanks to the inclusion of a little rosemary, and the olive bits will accentuate the flavor no end.

Sift together a cup of all-purpose flour, half a teaspoon of salt, a tablespoon of dry yeast and half a teaspoon of white sugar. Pour a cup of water into a saucepan and add three tablespoons of vegetable oil to it, and warm the mixture gently. When warmed, remove from heat.

Add half a cup of chopped black olives and a whole room-temperature egg to the dough mix. Add the water-oil mixture to the dry ingredients little by little, mixing gently with an electric mixer until smooth (there should be no lumps). While continuing to beat the mixture, slowly stir in an additional 1¾ cup flour, little by little, until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.

Prepare a surface for kneading by cleaning it thoroughly and flouring the surface to prevent the dough from sticking. Remove the dough from the bowl, place it on the surface, and knead in an additional ½ cup flour. Cover the dough with your mixing bowl and allow it to rest ten minutes.

Now place the dough on a lightly greased baking sheet. Using a rolling pin, roll it out gently to a circle 12 inches in diameter. Cover the dough circle with a clean towel and let it rest for 45 minutes.

After resting, uncover the dough and, using a fork, poke holes in it at 1½-inch intervals. Brush the dough with ¼ cup of olive oil, and bake it at 400 degrees Fahrenheit or 205 degrees Centigrade until light golden in color (around 15-30 minutes). Cool before using.

Doughy loaf

This problem basically concerns the temperature of the breadmaker.

Collapsed or flat-topped bread

Collapsing is mainly due to too much addition of liquid to the dough. The yeast in this case is overly stimulated, producing more gluten than the dough may withhold. This leads to the collapsing of loaf structure.

Bread sticking in the breadmaker pan

This can be resolved by brushing the breadmaker pan with oil before adding the water into the dough. This works well in the majority of conventional ovens as well.

Too much rising of the loaf

This problem may be controlled with the use of salt. Adding one half teaspoon of salt may be sufficient to keep the rising of the bread in balance.

One need not be an Einstein to run a simple machine such as the breadmaker. For more instruction and self-help tips, users may check the manual of the machine.
